Rashid century puts LGZ in command

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 20: A brilliant century by Rashid Ali gave Liaquatabad-Gulshan Zone (LGZ) the possible start in their quest to win the Karachi region title of the PCB Inter-district Senior Cricket Championship on Tuesday. The opener hammered 128 as the current leaders reached 294 in 75.4 overs in their final game against Nazimabad-Asifabad Zone at the Students Sports ground.

Liaquatabad-Gulshan Zone, who have 14 points as do second-placed Federal ‘B’ Area-New Karachi Zone at the start of the latest round of matches, then had Nazimabad-Asifabad Zone reeling at 21 for four by stumps on day one of the two-day match.

But the day belonged to Rashid who hit 10 fours and one six during his 153-ball innings. The leaders owed their commanding position to a last-wicket partnership of 87 between all-rounder Tahir Khan (59 not out, five fours and one six) and Abdul Qadir (41, seven fours).

Aftab Ahmed, the off-spinner, claimed four for 102 in 21 overs.

It was then left to pacemen Nasir Khan and Tariq Haroon to take two wickets apiece when Nazimabad-Asifabad Zone took their turn at the crease.

Federal ‘B’ Area-New Karachi Zone meet bottom-placed North Nazimabad-Orangi Zone in the final round of matches from Friday.

Meanwhile, Landhi-Korangi Zone, who also have an outside chance of winning the championship, were at the receiving end of some good batting by Old Karachi Zone at the Landhi Gymkhana ground. The Old Karachi side piled up 324 in 85.4 overs with wicket-keeper Ahmed Zeeshan Malik smashing eight boundaries in making 97 off 155 deliveries.

Left-handed opener Agha Sabir also was on song as he collected 57 off 117 balls with the aid of six fours and one six. Afsar Nawaz continued his good form in the tournament by scoring a 95-ball 55 which was laced with four fours and a brace of sixes.

Off-spinner Atiq Maqbool and left-arm paceman Malik Aftab captured four wickets each while giving away 86 and 69 runs respectively.

Landhi-Korangi saw off four overs before close of play to score 18 for no wicket.

Runs were hard to come by at the TMC ground where Malir-Shah Faisal Zone mustered a modest 216 before North Nazimabad-Orangi replied with 32 for two.

Summarised scores:
