KARACHI: PML, MQM in contact over naib nazim

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Sept 20: The Pakistan Muslim League (Q) is in contact with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement for soliciting support for his candidature, claimed Tariq Hasan, who is aspiring for the naib nazim’s slot in the city government Karachi.

Mr Hassan, who had also held the position in the outgoing CDGK, has filed nomination papers against labour seat to qualify for contesting the naib nazim’s slot.

However, there are no indications that the MQM would given up the slot as the party has already nominated Mrs Nasreen Jalil for the slot.

MQM’s deputy convenor Dr Farooq Sattar told Dawn that the party had informed the President and Chaudhri Shujaat about its difficulties in agreeing to the proposals.

He said that a committee

was already discussing various election related matters and this was one of the matters before it.

Dr Farooq Sattar said the MQM respected Mr Tariq Hassan but in view of the number game and the results, the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Pressing the issue would be an exercise in futility.

According to sources, there was intense pressure from the PML(Q) chief, but indications so far were that the MQM would not surrender Naib nazim’s slot because it does not consider the PML(Q) had the justifiable clout in the city.

Talking to Dawn, Mr Hassan claimed that he was nominated for the slot by Ch Shujaat Hussain, in consultation with chief minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, who is also the provincial president of the party.

He hoped that in a day or two, the negotiations would reach the logical conclusion.
