KARACHI, Sept 18: The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has restored its accreditation for three passed out batches (1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98) and one studying batch (2000) enrolled in the Chemical, Electronics and Metallurgical Engineering departments of the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology (DCET) Karachi for one year.

The PEC had cancelled accreditation of all four departments of the DCET in 1997 following its disaffiliation by the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi owing to the lack of scientific equipment, shortage of qualified and permanent faculty.

Since then, the passed out students from the DCET were facing immense hardships in getting employment at national industrial concerns including Wapda, Pakistan Steel Mills and others besides in foreign countries like Canada and the United States for want of PEC accreditation to their courses.

Confirming the re-accreditation of four of college batches by the PEC, enrolled in three college departments, DCET Principal Haider Ali Khan said on Saturday that the college’s accreditation was restored through a gazette notification of the Government of Pakistan signed by PEC Chairman Dr M Akram Shaikh.

“These three departments has been restored for one year only under the fresh criteria adopted by the PEC and the next year, PEC teams will visit the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology departments again and decide whether to accredit these departments or not “ the DCET principal informed adding that only the Industrial Engineering Department was not re-accredited by the PEC.

Earlier, addressing a seminar on “Switching over towards modern fuel” organized by the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) under the Study Aid Project (SAP) at the DCET premises, he advised students to apply for the PEC registration by completing all its requirements.

The Dawood College of Engineering and Technology principal said efforts were being made to get degree awarding status for the college so that more facilities of acquiring knowledge could be provided to the students.

Earlier, SAP Chairman Syed Rizwan Shah, former Jamshed Town nazim Ahmed Qasim Parekh, DCET faculty members Fahad Ahmed Khan, Waheedullah Bhutto and Misbahul Huda Siddiqui also spoke.—PPI
