Matloob finishes joint fourth

KARACHI, Sept 17: Pakistan number one Matloob Ahmed Rana finished on a joint fourth position in the Open South tournament at the Karnataka Golf Association (KGA) course in Bangalore on Friday.

According to the details, Matloob was tied for the fourth place with India’s C. Muniyappa after the final round of the four-day championship.

India’s Jyoti Randhawa won the championship by comfortable six strokes. At the turnaround after the ninth hole Randhawa was in a safe position to secure the title.

His nearest rival, Mukesh Kumar, was still six strokes behind the leader and Jyoti extended his lead to nine strokes by the 15th by which time the title was safely in the bag.

Randhawa messed up the last two holes with a bogey on the 17th and a double bogey on the 18th but was still six strokes ahead to take the winner’s cheque of Rs1, 84, 145.

The day began with a series of pars for Randhawa.

It was on the fifth hole that Randhawa had the only birdie of the day.

On the back nine too the strategy was to play it safe and only when he ensured that the title was his, he tried unsuccessfully to extend the margin.

Mukesh couldn’t overhaul Randhawa’s lead on the first nine holes.

On the return it looked as if he was beginning to play erratically as he dropped shots on the 12th, 14th and 15th holes.

The birdie on the 17th came far too late and the golfer had to be content with Rs1,26,527.

Digvijay Singh almost made it a family affair.

Two birdies at the start (1st and 4th) and a bogey on the sixth saw him creep up on the second spot.

Leading scores:

Jyoti Randhawa (71, 69, 69, 74) 283; Mukesh Kumar (67, 76, 72, 74) 289; Digvijay Singh (74, 72, 72, 72) 290; C. Muniyappa (73, 72, 73,73)/Matloob Rana (70, 73, 73, 75) 291 each; Vijay Kumar (75, 73, 73, 71) and Shamim Khan (75, 70, 72,75) 292 each.—PPI
