HYDERABAD, Sept 17: Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo has said that his party would not accept construction of any dam on the Indus River. He was briefing newsmen about the decision of his party’s central committee at the Awami House, Qasimabad, on Friday.
He said that the Tehrik will hold a national conference on December 24 in Hyderabad against the Kalabagh dam.
Mr Palijo said that after the third phase of the local body elections, other conferences like “save water, save Sindh” would be held at all district headquarters.
He said that the people of Sindh would not tolerate any more injustice as 80 per cent of Sindh’s water had already been given to Punjab by the federal government.
He said that Sindh had always been victimized by the federal government.
Mr Palijo said that the present rulers had no right to rule over the country as they had totally destroyed Quaid-i-Azam’s concept of Pakistan.
He said that the urban areas of Sindh had been handed over to terrorists. He said that the anti-greater Thal canal and Kalabagh dam action committee would announce their protest schedule afterwards.
National Workers Party leaders, Yousuf Masti Khan, Usman Baloch, and Farooq Baloch were also present at the occasion.
STPP: Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party leader Muzaffar Kalhoro has said that the Sindh chief minister was no more than a puppet in the hands of the Sindh governor.
He was speaking at the fifth convention of the Sindh National Party (dissident group) at the press club here on Friday evening. The conference was presided over by the central convenor of the party, Anwar Khoso.
Mr Kalhoro said that the chief minister could not take any decision without taking prior permission from the governor. He demanded distribution of the national finance commission award on the basis of revenue generation and asked people to get united on a single platform to launch struggle for the rights of Sindh.
Anwar Khoso, in his presidential speech, lashed out at the anti-Sindh forces and said that the forces wanted to destroy the province by constructing the Kalabagh dam and greater Thal canal.
He said that the people of Sindh would give all sacrifices to protect the waters of Indus.
The convention adopted several resolutions including demanding of jobs, payment of royalty to Sindh by multinational companies, regularization of Sindhi villages in Karachi, opposition of the issuance of national identity cards to foreigners and restoration of peace at the educational institutions.
Others who spoke also spoke on the occasion were Agha Shamshad, PML-N leader Afzal Gujjar, and Qasim Soomro.
