Deployment for polls in Afghanistan

KABUL, Sept 15: Afghanistan would deploy about 100,000 troops and police for this weekend’s landmark elections, the interior minister said on Thursday amid fears of attacks by militants loyal to the ousted Taliban regime.

The Afghan forces will be joined for Sunday’s parliamentary polls by around 30,000 troops from NATO and the US-led coalition.

“Afghan forces responsible for security during the election are around 100,000,” Interior Minister Ali Ahmed Jalali told journalists.—AFP
