CM supports urdu-speaking nazim for Mirpurkhas

By Our Correspondent

MIRPURKHAS, Sept 15: Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim has said that an Urdu-speaking nazim may head the district government of Mirpurkhas and there should be no opposition to such nomination. “I am not against an Urdu-speaking district nazim of Mirpurkhas as I do not believe in ethnic or lingual or religious distinction”, Mr Arbab said.

He was speaking at a press conference at the circuit house here on Thursday.

“When Urdu-speaking people can become nazim of Hyderabad and Karachi what is the harm if one heads the district government in the interior”, he said.

He said the PPP did not have candidates for district nazim and for that reason it was contacting people to join them.

He said the decision about candidates of district and taluka nazims was being taken in agreement with coalition partners in a democratic manner.

He said the PML and coalition partners had not reached consensus for candidate of district nazim for Mirpurkhas.

He said the matter had been deferred till September 19 on request of district PML president Khair Mohammad Bhurgari to field a consensus candidate.

Replying to a question, he said during a meeting held in Karachi Saeed Qureshi was nominated as candidate for district nazim Mirpurkhas in consultation with the MQM and the PML-F but after allies and the PML district chapter expressed reservations the matter was being reviewed.

He said the decision would be taken after consulting coalition partners to avoid doubts and the last night the MQM withdrew its support for Saeed Qureshi.

He said the PPP was merely levelling allegations given the fact that they did not have majority to form the district government.

He claimed his decisions were supported by Islamabad and ones taken in the first and second phase of local body elections had proved correct.

As far as decisions for talukas of Digri and Kunri were concerned it would be taken before September 19, he added.

He said taluka nazim Mirpurkhas would be nominated by the MQM.

He said after decisions for district nazims in Sindh and for their deputies would be taken with consultation.

He said after completion of the third phase of the local body elections he would again focus on the irrigation department to end corruption there and make the system effective one.

Meanwhile, the PML and its allies could not decide candidate for district nazim after holding detailed discussions at a meeting held at the circuit house.

The chief minister arrived here on Wednesday night to decide joint candidate for district nazim Mirpurkhas.

He held meeting attended by the zonal in-charge of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Saleem Razzaq, Sindh minister for health Shabbir Qaimkhani, PML district president Khair Muhammad Bhurgari and others.

It was learnt that Khair Mohammad Bhurgari proposed name of Jameel Ahmed Bhurgari as joint candidate for district nazim’s slot.

But no decision can be taken after several hours of discussions.

The MQM is reportedly showing its acceptability for a PML-F backed candidate.
