Opposition experts to draft amendments

By Ahmed Hassan

ISLAMABAD Sept 15: A committee of legal experts set up by the National Leaders Conference (NLC) on September 4 decided on Thursday to prepare a draft of constitutional amendments with a view to ensuring smooth transfer of power to an interim government, establishing a powerful election commission to hold transparent, fair and free elections and giving the country a completely independent judiciary.

The committee comprising Liaquat Baloch, Hamid Khan, Hafiz Abdur Rahman Ansari, Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Chaudhry Muhammad Ikram (advocates) and Senator Kamran Murtaza discussed the issue at a meeting.

The committee expressed grave concern over the constitutional, political and electoral crisis gripping the country and termed it dangerous for national security and integrity.

It said: “The military dictatorship and a constitution given by an individual are unexpectable to judiciary, parliament and human rights organisations. Massive rigging carried out in the local council elections, violation of the code of conduct and election commission’s helplessness before the government and administration are exposing dirty political and democratic map of the country”.

Leader of the Opposition in Senate Mian Raza Rabbani has also agreed with the opinion and proposals of the legal committee.

In a briefing, Liaqat Baloch said that the committee would prepare constitutional package within one month for this purpose it would meet again on October 1 at the residence of Syed Zafar Ali Shah. He said the committee agreed on the proposed constitutional amendments to put an end dictatorship and established a credible and stable democratic system in the coutnry.
