KARACHI, Sept 14: Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) organized a march from Sindh Secretariat to Karachi Press Club on Wednesday against growing poverty and non-availability of basic necessities of life to general public.
Wednesday was selected for the rally because President Musharraf was address the UN session. The objective of raising voice against poverty was to remind Pakistan government’s pledge to the international community of reducing poverty to 87 per cent, increasing literacy to 100 per cent and eradicating the child mortality rate to 50 per cent, as well as provide better environment to the population.
The marchers, holding placard, wore white bands and raised slogans demanding education, health and basic amenities for the masses.
PFF General-Secretary Saeed Baloch and Deputy Secretary Tahira Ali, while speaking on the occasion alleged that instead of fulfilling its pledges, the government had been depriving people whatever the facilities were available by effecting a constant increase in the prices of essential items.
They demanded provision of necessary facilities at educational, health and other such institutions to provide relief to poor masses, who included fishermen community.—PPI
