KARACHI: Teaching of geography on modern lines urged
KARACHI, Sept 14: The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), Dr Iqbal Mohsin, on Wednesday urged varsity faculty members to introduce new trends in teaching geography.
He asked the faculty to teach geography as per requirements of the modern era, and to use satellite, computers and GPRS technologies to boost the country’s economy, exports and urban planning.
Addressing a seminar on “New Trends in Geography” at the varsity, he said universities in the developed world helped their societies move in the right direction. Mr Mohsin said this would not only help the country overcome its economic and domestic issues but would also resolve problems faced by students in getting employment, both locally and internationally.
Dr Farkhanda Malik, in her address, called for making efforts for promoting tourism in the country, saying that by developing hotels and resorts, this sector could progress in Pakistan.
Dr Jamil Hassan displayed various portions of the FUUAST campus through satellite imaging.
Prof Qazi Shakeel of the Geography Department also addressed the seminar.
Chairperson of the FUUAST’s Chemistry Department, Prof Arshia Salahuddin, praised the performance of the varsity’s Higher Education Research Institute for promotion of research activities by providing over a 1,000 research journals and research books to the varsity.
Speaking at a ceremony for inaugurating a seminar library at the FUUAST’s Chemistry Department, she said her department was engaged in research activities and bringing the standard of teaching and research at par with international institutes.
Dr Qamarul Haq of the Urdu varsity lauded the services of HEC Chairman Dr Atta-ur-Rahman in promoting research activities in the country and also lauded the support of the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry extended to the FUUAST.—PPI
