KARACHI, Sept 14: A total of 109 candidates are in the run for 18 slots of town nazims in Karachi in the third phase of local elections. A town-wise break-up indicates that the highest number of aspirants (15) are from Landhi Town, followed by Keamari Town (12) Lyari 10, and Bin Qasim (10).
For the slot of city district nazim, 12 candidates are vying. They are former nazim Naimatullah Khan, M A Jalil, Babar Khan Ghauri, Habibuddin Junedi, Khwaja Tariq Nazeer, Dr Hanif Khan, Rizwan Ikram, Syed Zahid Ali, Syed Mustafa Kamal, Fauzia Wahab, Muslim Pervez, and Syed Waseem Akhtar.
The list of contestants for the seat of town nazims in the 18 towns is as follows:
Landhi Town: Fazlur Rehman, Mohammad Rafique, Misal Khan, Ilyas Masih, Mohammad Naeem, Ashraf Khan, Shahzad Humayun, Imran Ahmad, Mohammad Riaz, Irshad Ahmad, Shahjahan, Mohammad Ismail Qureshi, Sultan Ahmad, Iqbaluddin and Rana Safdar.
Keamari Town: Zulfikar Yunus, Humayoon Mohammad Khan, Mohammad Asif Khan, Shabbir Ahmad, Haji Ali Mohammad, Sajjad Ahmad Khan, Abdul Ghani Baloch, Qadir Khan Mandokhel, Mohammad Arif, Akhtar Pervez, Mohammad Hakim and Javed Yunus.
Lyari Town: Abdul Nasir Baloch, Malik Mohammad Khan, Ghulam Hussain, Mohammad Qasim, Malik Mohammad Fayyaz, Abdul Rasheed, Dhani Bux, Mohammad Ashraf, Abdul Razzaq and Usman Ghani.
Bin Qasim Town: Ishtiaq Awan, Ashfaq Mangi, Amir Ahmad, Jane Alam Jamote, Ashiq Ali jamote, Abdul Haq, Mohammad Afzal, Mohammad Omar Jat, Mohammad Yunus Baloch and Mastan Khan.
Gadap Town: Abdul Majid Memon, Ghulam Murtaza Baloch, Mohammad Aslam, Mohammad Adil Khan, Mohammad Arif Memon, Manzoor Ahmad Jokhio and Noor Hasan Jokhio.
Site Town: Mohammad Nawaz Khan Niazi, Syed Shahidullah, Amir Nawab Khan, Bashir Ahmad, Siddique Akbar and Izharuddin.
Saddar Town: Syed Mohammad Yaqub, Abdul Habib Memon, Mohammad Ejaz Alam, Mohammad Asif Siddiqui, Mohammad Dilwar and Nasir Rizwan.
Jamshed Town: Shahid Ali, Syed Tahir Hussain, Abid Hussain, Raja Arif Sultan, Mohammad Arshad Ali Khan and Saeed Ghani.
Malir Town: Ansar Ahmad, Sharafat Ali, Shaikh Liaquat Ali, Salahuddin Jamali, Mehmood Iqbal and Mohammad Kamal.
Baldia Town: Mohammad Kamran Jafri, Mohammad Amir, Kamran Akhtar, Aminul Haq, and Mohammad Ashraf Awan.
Gulshane Iqbal Town: Abdul Wahab, Mohammad Wasay Jalil, Syed Irshad Hasan and Abdul Aziz.
Korangi Town: Abdul Jamil Khan, Mohammad Asghar, Mohammad Imtiaz and Mohammad Arif Khan.
Orangi Town: Abdul Haq, Jameelur Rehman and Syed Manzar Imam.
North Nzimabad Town: Ajmal Naseem, Mumtaz Hameed and Qazi Aamir.
New Karachi Town: Saeed Ahmad Siddiqui, Muhammad Hanif Soorti and Syed Ansar.
Gulberg Town: Masood Ahmad Khan, Anwar Raza Naqvi and Liaquat Ali.
Liaquatabad: Osama Qadri, Basharat Ali and Tasneemul Hasan Farooqui.
Shah Faisal Town: Mohammad Islamullah Siddiqui, Mohammad Imran and Attique Ahmad.
Moreover, there are 174 candidates for city district council’s 59 reserved seats of women; 94 for nine seats of peasants and workers; and 45 candidates for nine seats of minorities.
The distribution of women seats in each town and the candidates are given below:
In Keamari, for three seats, there are 11 candidates; Site, for three seats, there are six contestants; Baldia, three seats with 10 contestants; Orangi, four seats and eight contestants; North Nazimabad, three seats and six contestants; New Karachi, four seats with seven contestants; Gulberg, three seats and eight candidates; Liaquatabad, four seats with nine candidates; Lyari, four seats and 19 candidates; Saddar four seats and 11 aspirants; Jamshed, four seats with 18 caniddates; Gulshan-i-Iqbal, four seats with 12 contestants; Shah Faisal, two seats with seven aspirants; Landhi, four seats with 13 candidates; Korangi, three seats and seven candidates; Malir, two seats and four contestants; Bin Qasim, two seats and seven candidates and Gadap, three candidates with 11 contestants.
Unofficial figures indicate of the nomination papers filed by different candidates in the third phase of local government elections 2005, further indicated that there are six towns where the number of candidates is not more than three viz a viz Orangi, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Gulberg, Liaquatabad and Shah Faisal.
Besides, in Site, Saddar, Jamshed and Malir, the number of candidates are six against each slot. In Korangi, and Gulshan-i-Iqabl towns, there are only four candidates while in Baldia and Gadap towns, threre are five and seven candidates respectively.
