Sami sends Australia ‘A’ to crushing defeat

By Our Sports Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Sep 13: Pakistan ‘A’ rode on the good work of their bowlers to score a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Australia ‘A’ inside three days in the first unofficial Test at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Led by paceman Mohammad Sami, the attack tore the Australian batting apart after the home side had managed to gain a slender 17-run first innings lead.

Sami, under pressure to perform to win his place on the Pakistan side for the England tour starting next month, picked up 4-33 to trigger the Australian fall for 130 in the second innings.

Paceman Umar Gul, returning to action after recovering from a back injury, underlined his potential to claim 2-15 in his 11 overs with six maiden but Shahid Nazir’s figures of 4-1-15-2 were even more economical.

Captain Brad Haddin with 34 runs led the scoring followed by New South Wales’ Nathan Bracken who managed 30 runs before both fell to Sami.

Set to score 114 for victory, opener Salman Butt made up for his first innings duck to crack a fine 47 while Shoaib Malik chipped in with 38 as Pakistan ‘A’ were home in 19.5 overs losing three wickets.

Those three scalps that included both openers were snapped up by right-arm leg spinner Cameron White who conceded 36 runs in 5.5 overs that he bowled.

Earlier, when play began on the third day, the home tail was mopped up by Queensland pacer Shane Watson who had Umar Gul and Shahid Nazir, both for nought as the hosts fell for 213 replying to Australia’s first innings 196. Zulqarnain Haider, 26 overnight, stayed unbeaten on 37.

The next ‘Test’ between the two sides begins at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi from Saturday following which the teams head to Lahore to play three one-dayers.
