Punjab govt to set up modern libraries

RAWALPINDI, Sept 13: The Punjab government has prepared a Rs2 billion project for setting up modern computerized public libraries well equipped to facilitate children, special persons and the elderly, sources said.

They said Punjab Governor Lt-Gen (retired) Khalid Maqbool had given approval to the project which would be undertaken under the Higher Education Commission’s programme for establishment of libraries.

In Rawalpindi, the proposed library would be set up at the site of Municipal Library. It would have children, textbooks, periodicals, computer and multi-media sections besides a medium- size auditorium to organize seminars, lectures, conferences and book exhibitions.

The existing library was damaged by floods in the Leh in the year 2000. At present, it has a collection of about 32,400 books. —Our Reporter
