LAHORE, Sept 12: No candidate filed nomination papers for the office of district nazim and naib nazim on the first of filing papers on Monday but many moved candidature for special seats reserved for women, peasants and workers.
With the filing of nominations for nazims, naib nazims and reserved seats, the third phase of local body elections began on Monday. The local councils will elect them on October 6 and the whole process will complete by the mid of the month.
A total 155 people filed their nominations, mostly for reserved seats, including those for nazim and naib nazim for nine towns of the city.
Former nazim Sardar Adil Umar filed his nominations for the office of Iqbal Town nazim. Mohammad Ashraf and Ashraf Ali are the other candidates for the office.
Akbar Khan and Mian Javed filed papers for the office of Samanabad Town nazim. Wajid Husain filed his candidature for Ravi Town nazim. Dr Mohammad Zahid was also the lone candidate for the same office in Nishtar Town while Malik Shahid Aslam was the candidate for Gulberg Town nazim.
Most of the nazim candidates have no political identity. But all the known political figures for the important office would jump into the electoral field by Tuesday, the last day for the filing of nominations.
The City District Government has 50 seats, one-third of the union council nazims who, by virtue of their office, will form the total membership of the district assembly of the Punjab metropolis. Not many women filed their nominations. However, 22 filed their nominations for eight seats reserved for peasant and workers. Only eight nominations were received for a similar number of seats reserved for minorities.
