PPP union nazims defy party, back JI nominee

By Our Correspondent

CHITRAL, Sept 12: Twelve union nazims of the PPP announced here on Monday evening that they would support the Jamaat-i-Islami’s nominee for the post of district nazim.

The announcement was made at a hurriedly called press conference in the Chitral Press Club.

Lawmaker Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali and other leaders of the JI were present on the occasion.

After talks between the two parties collapsed on Sunday, the nazims elected from the PPP platform decided to defy the decision of their party’s district president and entered into an alliance with the JI-backed Al-Khidmat group.

The PPP-backed nazims said that as part of the agreement the PPP would acquire control over the posts of tehsil nazims of Chitral and Mastuj and district naib nazim.

They also announced that they would support Haji Maghfirat Shah of the Jamaat-i-Islami for the post of district nazim.

They said that the district government of the JI-PPP alliance would try its best to forge unity among all communities in the district and put an end to parochialism and other factionalism hindering the pace of development in Chitral.

Twenty out of 24 union nazims of the district attended the press conference. The union nazims of the PPP included Abdul Bari(Drosh), Haider Abbas (Drosh II), Riaz Ahmed ( Chitral II), Ameer Khan Jalali (Kosht), Mohammad Wazir Khan (Yarkhoon), Rehmat Ilahi (Ayun), Ameerullah (Charun), Mohammad Nawaz (Terich), Sher Aziz Baig( Khot), Mohammad Qayyum Shah (Laspur) and others.
