Bilal hammers century

ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: Bilal Asad struck a blazing 171 on Sunday as Islamabad piled up 338 for three on the rain-hit first day of their PCB Inter-district senior cricket championship match against Northern Areas. Bilal blasted 20 fours and two sixes in his 131-ball knock. Fayyaz Ahmed scored 95 with 10 fours.

Islamabad have already emerged the champions irrespective of the result of the current match.

Attock’s slow left-arm bowler Jameel Mahmood returned impressive figures of 8-69 in 26.3 overs as Rawalpindi were restricted to 266.

But Attock were left tottering at 65-6 by the close.

Our Sports Correspondent adds from Lahore: An unbeaten century by Shahbaz Bashir and a 14-ball 42 by Mohammad Shahzad helped North Zone Whites pile up 406 for seven against East Zone Blues in the Lahore region match at the LCCA ground.

Shahbaz scored 140-ball 102 while hitting 14 fours and six sixes, including five in an over. Opener Ashfaq Ahmed scored 80.

Fine batting by Adnan Butt, who retired hurt at 90 guided North Zone Blues to a winning position against West Zone Whites at the Mughalpura Institute ground.

West Zone Whites were all out for 249 in 59.5 overs despite a fine 99 (17 fours) by Adnan Raza.

By the close of play, North Zone Blues were 151 for two.

West Zone Blues were on the brink of victory against East Zone Whites at the Railways Stadium after the latter were dismissed for 190.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Karachi: Intermittent spells of rain in the city meant that only 35 minutes of play was possible on the first day of the Karachi region matches.

In that time, Nazimabad-Asifabad Zone scored 17 without loss in 6.1 overs against Federal ‘B’ Area-New Karachi Zone when play was abandoned for the day at Asifabad Sports ground.

There was no play at Students Sports ground between Old Karachi Zone and North Nazimabad-Orangi Zone and at Landhi Gymkhana ground, where Liaquatabad-Gulshan Zone were facing Landhi-Korangi Zone.
