PPP-JI talks for Chitral seats fail

Published September 12, 2005

CHITRAL, Sept 11: The much-awaited electoral alliance between the Jamaat-i-Islami and PPP did not come about due to lack of flexibility or both sides in working out a formula for distribution of seats of district nazim and two tehsil nazims. According to sources in the JI, the PPP insisted on having posts of district nazim and tehsil nazim of Mastuj while the JI demanded either district nazim’s seat or the seats of nazims of both the tehsils of Chitral and Mastuj.

The sources said that PPP leaders claimed a major share due to larger number of their councillors which the JI did not accpet. Of the 24 union councils of the district, PPP-backed candidates have won 13 while the JI bagged 8. The rest went to PML-Q led by former district nazim Shahzada Mohyuddin.

He is said to be jubilant over the failure of talks between the JI and PPP and is said to be eyeing his victory in the forthcoming election of district nazim.

It may be mentioned here that the talks for alliance between PML-Q and PPP had already failed.

TWO BURNT TO DEATH: At least two men died and many sustained injurieswhen a gas cylinder explosion caused fire in a shop on Booni Road at Denin on Sunday.

Bodies of the victims, Roohul Ameen and Fazle Rahim, were sent to their village in Mohmand Agency and the injured were admitted to the district headquarters hospital.
