Army claim team title despite Kiran’s outstanding effort

LAHORE, Sept 10: Despite an impressive tally of 12 gold medals won by Kiran Khan, defending champions Wapda were dethroned by Army who emerged as the new champions of the National women’s swimming championship at the Model Town Club pool on Saturday.
Army with a tally of six gold, 13 silver and six bronze medals made 142 points leaving Wapda behind at second spot.
Wapda obtained 104 points with 12 gold, two silver medals.
Kiran claimed all gold medals for Wapda.
Punjab also put up a tough fight to Wapda as it came in third with a difference of only one point.
Punjab scored 103 points with two gold, two silver and nine bronze medals.
Sindh collected 52 points after seizing one silver and four bronze to remain fourth.
Islamabad, NWFP and Higher Education Commission all failed to claim any medal. Kiran, who claimed six gold medals on the first day repeated a similar performance on the final day but at the end found Army snatching away the title. Kiran clinched a gold in 50m backstroke, 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m back-stroke and 200m butterfly.
Rubab Raza, another international swimmer of Pakistan gave Army a gold in the 50m freestyle clocking 29.12sec to set a new national record. Rubab improved her own timing of 29.57sec which she achieved in the World championship’s heat in Canada this year.
Rubab was also the member of the Army team who won a gold in the 4x100m medley relay.
Meharunnisa also gave a gold to Army in 50m breaststroke clocking 39.96sec.
