KARACHI: Girls dominate in Pre-engg, Science General exams

By Mukhtar Alam

KARACHI, Sept 10: The Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, on Saturday declared the results of HSC Part-II Pre-engineering and Science General groups annual examinations 2005.

According to a BIE notification on Saturday, the top three positions in the Pre-engineering group were secured by students of one private and two government colleges, while all the top three positions in the Science General group went to students of the DHA Degree College for Women.

As many as 23,161 candidates, including 6,699 women, appeared in the Pre-engineering exams, and 11,894, including 3,712 women, were declared pass. The pass percentage remained 51.39, which is about 2.5 per cent less than last year’s.

Rafia Iqbal Hashmi, roll no 191351, of the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, clinched first position in the Pre-engineering group by securing 986 out of 1100 marks. Second and third positions went to two students of Government Adamjee Science College, Imran Saleh, roll no 183481; and Saad Masood, roll no 183682, respectively.

In the Science General group, the first position was secured by Farah Essani, roll no 247275. She got 932 marks out of a total 1100. The second and third positions went to Sadaf Sajjad, roll no 247247, and Fatima Aslam, roll no 247279 respectively.

The breakdown of successful candidates in the Pre-engineering group are as follows: A-1 grade, 245 male and 172 females; A grade, 1131 male and 746 females; B grade, 1850 male and 1046 females; C grade, 2636 male and 1208 females; D grade 2150, male and 522 females; E grade, 140 male and three females; and additional subject (pass), 140 male and three females.

A similar breakdown of the Science General group is as follows: A-1 grade, five females only; A grade, two male and 74 females; B grade 38 males and 184 females; C grade, 137 males and 232 females; D grade, 156 males and 41 females; E grade, 10 males and four females; and additional subjects (pass), five males and one female.

The results of 20 candidates in both the groups were withheld either for want of information or on account of using unfair means.

The Chairman of BIE, Prof Syed Iftikhar Zaidi, gave away certificates to position holders at a ceremony held at the board on Saturday.

The BIE’s Controller of Examinations, Prof Mohammad Amin Khalid, said marks sheets of candidates in the Pre-engineering group securing A-1 grade would be issued from Monday either through the colleges concerned or direct at the Board, so that those aspiring to get admissions to institutions outside Karachi could get them in time.

Meanwhile, a majority of the Pre-engineering and Science General groups’ position holders have decided to switch over to faculties other than science, mainly business administration and accountancy. They believed that continuing engineering or computer science education would not yield major financial gains.

Some of the toppers said that the government’s efforts to get students of madressahs educated in modern subjects was a positive thing, but at the same time proper attention should be given to education of Quran and Sunnah.

Being Muslims, students should be taught about their religion and origin, social values and moral basics as well, they added.

A couple of position holders were of the view that mandatory attendance rules had never been made effective in government colleges.
