KARACHI: Sale of crackers

KARACHI, Sept 10: A decline in the sale and use of firecrackers in the city, following strict directive by the Karachi administration, but still the business is going on unchecked in the localities dominated by poor families.

The Landhi and Saddar town administrations had taken the lead by announcing a ban on firecrackers and other such material. However, all other town administrations are apparently in slumber.

Dozens of laws and rules are there preventing the possession and sale of the dangerous material but it depends on police to implement them effectively, especially in the light of recent directives of the Sindh home minister, according to district administration officials.

There have been raids in the city over the last few weeks which have resulted in confiscation of firecrackers and similar material, according to police sources who maintained that they were discharging their duty in this regard efficiently.—APP
