PESHAWAR, Sept 9: The Higher Education Commission has approved Rs3 billion projects for the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Peshawar, and sent them for approval of the Central Development Working Party and the ECNEC. This was stated by UET Vice-Chancellor Syed Imtiaz Hussein Gilani while talking to APP.
He said that the basic thrust of the projects was at the fundamental issues quality education and relevance to existing environment.
He said that the projects envisaged opening new departments and upgrading of existing facilities, both academic (faculty development and laboratory strengthening) and improvement in infrastructure.
The VC hoped that after the projects were implemented, the UET would change into a world-class engineering university, producing engineers of excellence.
He added that the UET had submitted a long-term ‘vision plan’ that covered up to 2020 and would bring a sea change in the UET, ensuring quality education and relevance to Pakistan’s immediate and long term needs.
He said that in view of the increasing demand for mechanical engineers conversant with electronics and computer by the local industry, a new academic programme in the discipline of mechatronics engineering would be introduced in the university.
He added that the PC-1 of the project worth Rs37 million had been approved by the HEC and work on it was in final stages.
Besides, he said, the UET had decided to set up an institute of mechatronics engineering to produce about 30 mechatronics engineers per year and carry out research in the field.
The federal government had approved a three-year project costing Rs147.6 million for this purpose, he added.
He said that the institute would be housed in its own building for which 40 kanals of land had been acquired in Hayatabad.
He said that since well-qualified faculty was backbone of an academic institution, the university was sending its faculty members abroad for acquiring masters and doctoral degrees in the field.
Mr Gilani said that the UET was in final stages of establishing the first earthquake engineering centre in the country with the cost of Rs38.932 million.
He said that the Departmental Development Working Party had approved a project of the UET to construct two girls’ hostels, one at Peshawar campus and other at Abbottabad campus.
Each hostel would house 100 students and cost of the project was Rs36.582 million, Mr Gilani said.
