BD newsman among Magsaysay winners

MANILA, Sept 9: A Bangladeshi journalist and an Indonesian government official are among the recipients of this year’s Magsaysay awards, according to a press release of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation. Matiur Rahman, founder and editor of Prothom Alo, received the award in the ‘Journalism and Literature’ category for ‘wielding the power of the press to crusade against acid throwing and to stir Bangladeshis to help its many victims’, the statement said.

Teten Masduki, head of Indonesia Corruption Watch, was conferred the Public Service award in recognition of ‘his challenging Indonesians to expose corruption and claim their right to clean government’.

The other winners were Dr V. Shanta, chief of India’s Cancer Institute (Public Service); Thailand’s Senator Jon Ungphakorn (Government Service), Sombath Somphone of Laos (Community Leadership), and South Korea’s Ms Hye-Ran Yoon (Emergent Leadership).
