Pakistan hopes dashed as Sumit tames Yasir

LAHORE, Sept 8: Top seed Sumit Prakash Gupta ended Pakistan hopes of landing a title when he outclassed the last home survivor Yasir Khan in straight sets, making it all-India final of the ITF Junior tennis championship at the Bagh-i-Jinnah courts on Thursday.

Gupta will meet compatriot Kinshuk Sharma in the final, who defeated another Indian Anshuman Dutta in three-set prefinals.

Sixth seed Yasir, who displayed impressive performance before qualifying for the semifinals, however, never threatened Gupta and lost 6-2, 6-4.

The Indian was aggressive from the start and repeatedly found winners executing fine forehand and court coverage. He broke Yasir’s serves in the second and the fourth games to win the first set.

Yasir put up some resistance in the second set but in the end it was Gupta who deservedly earned a place in the fina.

The clash of Sharma and Dutta, however, provided delightful moments to the fans. Sharma won 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.

Sharma and Dutta played baseline game and exchanged long rallies.

Sharma having strong forehand, however, also came on the net on occasions to earn winners.

Sharma won the first set after breaking Dutta’s in the ninth game. But Dutta returned bounced back in the second set and folded it without losing a game to level the score 1-1 as Sharma went on the defensive.

In the decisive set, Sharma changed the strategy and started attacking on the net and won the set and the match, too. Uunseeded Mythri Prerna Appineni (India) and Khunpak Issara (Thailand) caused upsets in the semifinals to set a clash in the final.

Appineni dumped third seed Jawairiah Noor Din (Malaysia) 7-5, 6-3 while Issara defeated compatriot and the sixth seed Prariyawat Ratanakrong 6-2, 7-5. Gupta and Dutta also qualified for the boys’ doubles finals beating Vikram Reddy-Kaushik Das (India) 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the semifinals.

They will meet Kinshuk Sharma (Ind) and Khunpol Issara (Thailand) in the final, who defeated Gusher Harika-Iswin Vijayaragaban (Ind) in a well contested three-set semifinals 6-3, 5-7, 7-2.

In the girls’ doubles, Issara of Thailand and Vishakha Sheroran entered the final, beating Tejaswini Datla-Karina Ahuja 6-1, 6-3 and will meet Jawairoh and Inayat Khosla (Ind) who eliminated Satjaporn Mahajaronkul-Prariyawat Ratankrong 6-2, 6-1.

Girls’ singles (semifinals): Mythri Prerna Appineni (Ind) bt Jawairiah Noor Din (Malaysia) 7- 5, 6-3; Khunpak Issara (Thai) bt Prariyawat Ratankrong (Tha) 6-2, 7-5.

Boys’ doubles (semifinals): Sumit Prakash Gupta-Anshuman Dutta (Ind) bt Vikram Reddy-Kaushik Das (Ind) 6-2, 7-6 (4); Kinshuk Sharma-Khunpol Issara (Tha) bt Gusher Harika-Iswin Vijayaragaban 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Girls’ doubles (semifinals): Khunpak Issara-Vishakha Sheoran (Thailand) bt Tejaswini Datla0Karina Ahuja (Ind) 6-1, 6-3; Jawairih Noor Din (Mas)- Inayat Khosla (Ind) bt Satjaporn Mahajaronkul-Prariyawat Ratankong 6-2, 6-1.
