Girls ousted, three boys enter quarterfinals

LAHORE, Sept 6: All Pakistani girls were ousted from the ITF junior tennis championship singles while three boys managed to qualify for the quarterfinals at the Bagh-i-Jinnah courts on Tuesday.

Sara Mansoor, Saba Aziz and Nida Rahim lost their pre-quarterfinal matches ending all hopes of home victory.

Jawairiah Noor Din of Malaysia ousted Sara 6-3, 6-1.

Inayat Khosla (India) whitewashed Saba 6-0, 6-0.

Vishaka Sheroan, another Indian, showed no mercy to Nida, winning impressively with a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline.

In the biggest upset of the day the march of top seed Karina Ahuja of India was halted by compatriot, unseeded Mythri Prena Appineni.

Appineni battled for two hours and 32 minutes to earn a notable win 6-1, 6-7 (3),6-4.

Appineni challenged Karina by winning the first set easily. The top seed, however, tried to recover but she faced a stiff challenge from her rival before levelling the score 1-1, winning the second set in a tie-breaker.

But it was Appineni’s day as she romped home winning the deicisive third set 6-4.

Prariyawat Ratanakrong of Thailand also booked a place in the last eight, beating Sanjana Kapoor (India) 6-3, 6-4.

In the boys’ event, Tanvir Ashiq, Yasir Khan, and M Omar Babar qualified for the quarterfinals from Pakistan.

Unseeded Tanvir upset fifth ranked Gursher Harika 6-1, 7-5. Tanvir showed a high class game and gave Gursher no room to manoeuvre throughout the match.

Yasir, the brother of Pakistan’s number one ranked Aqeel Khan, won easily against Indian Chandril Sood 6-2, 6-1. Chandril, a 14-year-old boy, though lost the match he played with much confidence.

Unseeded Omar, however, was stretched to three sets by the 8th seed Honey Rana (India) before completing a stunning 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win in two hours 45 minutes.

Omar was on the offensive from the word go and wrapped up the first set after dropping only one game.

Honey staged a comeback to level the score 1-1 winning the second set easily.

But Omar regained the ascendency winning the third set to move into the last eight.

Top seed Sumit Prakash Gupta (India) earned a facile 6-0, 6-0 win against Talal Khan (Pak). Mubashir Afridi, another Pakistani fell to Indian Rahul Belwal 6-0, 6-4.

In another three-setter Anshuman Dutta (India) outfought Khunpol Issara (Thailand) 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Six matches in the boys’ doubles pre-quarterfinals and one in girls’ doubles were also decided.
