KARACHI, Sept 6: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday rejected a House Building Finance Corporation (HBFC) plea to bar 718 of its employees from taking part in trade union activities.
The employees, who worked across the country as superintendents or held other identical positions, were ‘promoted’ and then re-designated as assistant managers. Subsequently, they were told by the management to steer clear of trade union activities as they had “ceased to be workmen” and were, therefore, barred from participating in union affairs under the Industrial Relations Ordinance. The decision had weakened the union’s strength and left fewer than 400 of its lower grade employees to deal with collective bargaining.
