KARACHI, Sept 6: A major organization of transporters has convened a meeting on Wednesday to decide about joining, or otherwise, the strike on Friday against the sharp increase of petroleum prices, called by opposition parties in the country.
According to a press release issued by the Karachi Transport Ittehad on Tuesday, its president Irshad Bokhari said the Ittehad had been struggling for safeguarding the rights of transporters, and the meeting had been convened after the opposition gave a strike call for Friday.
He said transporters would decide if the strike call should be given on Friday or if it could be moved to another date.
He said the KTI had demanded of the government to reverse the increase in petroleum prices to those prior to June 30 otherwise the Ittehad reserved the right to give a strike call in protest.
He also demanded that the Oil Companies’ Advisory Committee (OCAC) should be disbanded and oil prices be fixed for at lease six months.
He appealed to the government to fix the price of petrol at Rs37 and that of diesel at Rs24 per litre.
