Babar downs India’s Shandilya

LAHORE, Sept 5: Six boys and four girls from Pakistan moved to next round after 24 matches were decided in both categories on the first day of the ITF junior tennis championship on Monday. In the boys’ event, Talal Khan, Tanveer Ashiq, Mubashar Afridi, Yasir Khan, Omer M Baber and Khurram Nazir won their matches.

Talal beat compatriot Waqas Malik 6-4, 6-2. Tanveer also toppled Syed M Abbas Raza 6-1, 6-0.

Mubashar won when Neil Rajpal (Canada) left the court in the first set due to fitness problems while trailing 4-2.

Yasir eliminated the challenge of another Pakistani Nasir Mushtaq 6-1, 6-1.

Omer M Baber carved out a victory against Indian Rubal Shandilya 6-3, 7-5.

Khurram ousted Ahmed Aslam 6-0, 7-5 Top seed Prakash Sunit Gupta of India had easy sailing beating Danish Ahmed (Pakistan) 6-0, 6-2.

However, in the best match of the day Honey Rana (India) defeated Aswin Vijayaragavan, who retired hurt in the third set.

Honey lost the first set but came back in the second to level the score 1-1. In the third set Honey was leading 2-0 when Aswin opted to concede the match due to cramp.

In the girls’ event, only five matches were played while 11 players got byes.

Four Pakistanis Sarah Mahboob, Sara Mansoor, Nida Rahim and Saba Aziz qualified for the second round.

But at the end of the day, Sarah Mehboob, who got a bye in the first round, failed to reach the quarterfinals after she was beaten by Neha Rana (India) in the second round 6-4, 6-3.

Two girls from Thailand also moved to the last eight. Satajporn Mahajaroenkul outplayed India’s Anushka Kapoor 6-0, 6-1.

Khunpak Issara was declared winner when Tejaswini Dalta retired hurt in the first set at 4-2 down.
