HYDERABAD, Sept 5: The chairman of the Sindh National Party, Mr Amir Bhambhro, has criticized construction of the Kalabagh dam or any other dam on the Indus River. He said dams would be harmful not only for the people of Sindh but also for other oppressed people.

Speaking at the fifth workers’ convention here on Sunday, he said the party would hold demonstrations in Islamabad, Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur in October to protest against an inordinate delay in announcement of the NFC award.

He said despite strong opposition from the people of three provinces and elected provincial assemblies, the rulers were adamant to construct more dams.

He said after fragmentation of districts, massive rigging had been done in the local body elections to hand over districts of Sindh to traitors and terrorists.

He said time had come for the people of Sindh to unite on one platform and launch a joint struggle as well as resistance against anti-Sindh projects.

He called upon international financial agencies and the World Bank not to provide any funds for anti-Sindh projects.

The vice-chairman of the party, Khan Dahiri, general secretary Dilshad Bhutto, Makhdoom Aqil, Rasheed Magsi and Nisar Khoso also spoke on the occasion.

The convention adopted several resolutions rejecting the Kalabagh dam and Thal canal and demanded that Sindh be provided water according to the 1945 agreement.

It demanded that provinces be given full autonomy in accordance with the 1940 Resolution.

It demanded that the NFC award be announced on the basis of financial resources, role of army and agencies be eliminated from politics, free education be provided from primary to the university level and effective steps be taken to end poverty, unemployment and price hike.

Other demands include announcement of an agricultural package for farmers and haris of Sindh, rights of women be restored, wages of the working class be increased, demolition of Sindhi villages in Karachi be stopped and political prisoners be released.
