‘Sonia not to be barred from going abroad’

By Khawar Ghumman

ISLAMABAD, Sept 4: The government has no problem if Sonia Naz wants to leave the country and is ready to provide facilities to her in this regard, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Women Development Nilofar Bakhtiar said here on Sunday.

She was briefing the press on a two-day ‘Regional Conference on Violence Against Women’ scheduled for Sept 7-8 in Islamabad.

In reply to a question, the adviser said: “We did not stop Dr Shazia Khalid and will not impose government’s will on Sonia Naz to stay back or leave the country.” Despite assurances from the authorities, Dr Shazia Khalid had requested the government to allow her leave the country for security reasons and the government had accepted and facilitated her travel, the adviser said.

However, Dr Shazia Khalid after reaching the UK alleged that the government had forced her to leave the country.

If Sonia Naz wanted to leave the country for whatsoever reasons, the government had no objection, as she was an independent citizen of the country. However, as long as she was in the country, the government would support in getting her justice by all means, Ms Nilofar said.
