Favourite Poly Nest claims Silver Jubilee Cup
LAHORE, Sept 4: Leading Owner, Khawaja M. Arif had a very profitable day when he won three of the eight cup races during the Lahore Meeting races at the Racecourse on Sunday. Khawaja Arif bagged the LRC Silver Jubilee Cup through his filly Poly Nest, which was incidentally the feature event.
He also won the Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed Cup when his bay horse Ponche edged out Millennium Count at the finishing post in the sixth race.
Earlier, his chestnut filly Trace Hit had won the Major Raja Aziz Bhatty Shaheed Cup outclassing a field of 14 runners in the fourth race.
The Lahore Race Club (LRC) held the feature event to celebrate its silver jubilee of holding races at Kot Lakhpat Racecourse introduced in September 1981.
The other seven cups were named after national war heroes and the recipients of the highest gallantry award, Nishan-i-Haider in connection with the Defence of Pakistan Day being observed on Sept 6.
The Rashid Minhas Shaheed Cup was annexed by rank outsider Scarlet Empress, who pipped favourite My Love at the finishing post by a head.
Queen Of Saba made amends when winning the Maj Muhammad Akram Shaheed Cup defeating King Sound.
Bay colt Ghoray Wah claimed the Maj Tufail Muhammad Shaheed Cup comfortably beating Baker Eye.
Long shot Black House in a surprise turn of foot beat hot favourite Miss Photogenic to win the Capt. Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed Cup.
Bay gelding Yard Arm proved too good for his eight rivals to claim the Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed Cup defeating Raad in a close finish.
The LRC took the race-goers by a pleasant surprise when mid-way through the proceedings it was announced that last three races of the card would be held under flood-lights in a bid to test the efficacy of the newly installed lighting system at the Racecourse. It turned out a very successful venture.
However, the LRC chairman told Dawn the formal inauguration of the night-racing in floodlights will be held some time later.
Mubarik Ali was the most successful among the trainers. He sent out three cup winners in Trace Hit, Ponche and Poly Nest.
