KARACHI, Sept 4: Five people died in road accidents in different parts of the metropolis on Sunday. Three youths on a scooter were hit by a dumper on Native Jetty Bridge in the early hours, leaving two of them dead. The deceased were later identified as Roshan and Jawed. Their bodies were handed over to their families after autopsy.
The third person, Naveed, sustained injuries and was taken to the Civil Hospital. The dumper sped away from the scene.
In another accident, two youths on a motorbike died after their vehicle hit an electric pole near airport. The accident occurred due to slippery road. Their bodies were shifted to the JPMC where they were identified as Salim Raza, 23, a resident of Lyari, and Mumtaz Ali, 21, a resident of Quaidabad.
A nine-year-old boy, Jagat Ram, was knocked down by a truck in Manzoor Colony. The boy died on the spot and his body was shifted to the JPMC for autopsy. The truck was impounded but its driver managed to escape.
SHOT DEAD: A 30-year-old man, Ghulam Haider, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Gulshan-i-Ghazi on Sunday.
The assailants had knocked at the door of his house located in the Mochko police limits and as he opened the door they opened fire. Haider received a bullet in his head and died instantly. The killers fled. Police believed that the murder could be the outcome of some personal enmity.
Meanwhile, the body of a man in his 30s was found near railway tracks in Landhi. It was sent to the JPMC where the victim was identified as Lal Sher, 30, of Swabi descent. A bullet mark in his head was visible.
CHIEF SECRETARY: Sindh Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman here on Sunday expressed concern over the recent traffic accidents in Karachi and asked the transport and traffic departments to take stern measures for strict implementation of traffic rules, so that the precious lives of citizens could be saved, PPI adds.
Referring to a series of accidents during the last month especially caused by reckless driving of dumpers and other heavy vehicles, the Sindh chief secretary asked the officials concerned to take foolproof measures against violation of traffic signals, overtaking and reckless driving.
He said that drivers breaking the speed limits should be taken to the task without any leniency.
The chief secretary said that uphold of traffic rules should be implemented on roads and highways, and public transport be made bound to follow the traffic rules.
He stressed that playing of tape-recorders in buses, minibuses and coaches should strictly be prohibited, as this practice not only resulted in the harassment of female commuters, but also caused serious road mishaps.
The chief secretary said that heavy traffic should be allowed to enter the city only on the allotted time schedule, so that dumpers, trawler-trucks and loaders could not enter the city during the banned morning and evening hours.
He also ordered the fisheries and environment department officials to ensure that dead fish washed to the shore could not be used for eating purposes and said that preventive steps in this regard should be taken, so that the dead fish trash could not be bought or sold for human consumption.
