Filly Poly Nest should land Jubilee Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Sept 3: An interesting and competitive card featuring eight cup races highlights the first Lahore Winter Meeting to be held at the Lahore Racecourse on Sunday.

Seven cup events, bearing the names of national war heroes, the recipients of the highest gallantry award, Nishan-i-Haider, are being held in connection with the Defence of Pakistan Day and the eighth to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the founding of the Kot Lakhpat Racing facility, which took a modest start on Sept 6th, 1981.

However, there will be no pomp and show befitting the occasion. Races will be held in a simple but impressive ceremony

Three-year-old filly, Poly Nest, who registered a facile victory on Aug 14, can claim the feature event, the LRC Silver Jubilee Cup, a class III handicap race to be gone over 1200m.

Her closest rivals could be Owais Prince and Poly Nest’s stable-mate Mumtaz Mahal. The bay filly Mumtaz Mahal is however, not in its top form because of leg trouble which kept her away from the track for some time in the past. This will be the seventh race in racing order.

In the Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed Cup, a class IV division I handicap race, there are a dozen runners barring last- minute withdrawals. Of them four come into reckoning.

They are: Top-weight Lucky Murad, Who Dares, Millennium Count and Ponche.

The way the aged gelding, Millennium Count, owned by Munir Dar, won the race last Aug 14, stunning race-goers by his superb performance, he should not face any difficulty in making it two in-a-row.

Millennium Count has proved very lucky for the owner, who has won over rupees two million in stake-money so far and is still going strong to swell owner’s purse with more money.

But this time Millennium Count will have to fight with his rivals. This will be the sixth race of the card.

Sajrey Phul, Miss Photogenic and Zoro are the pick of the ten contenders field for the Capt. Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed Cup.

However, on recent form and past performance it looks a race between Miss Photogenic and Sajrey Phul owned by one owner, Khawaja M. Arif. It would be difficult for him whom to fancy because both are equally good fillies on chance and breeding too. This will be the fifth race on Sunday.

There seems to be only two serious contenders for Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Cup in the 14-strong field, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. And that should be a good contest.

This will be the fourth race of the day. The Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed Cup has nine acceptors. It looks an open affair. The form horses in this third race of the day are Manu Janu, Royal performance and Love Moon.

Baker Eye and Ghoray Wah are although not in top form but both are capable of turning the table on classification, Baker Eye having an edge.

The chestnut filly Queen Of Saba, Run And Win, Capeletti and Over Trick are the pick of the biggest field comprising 18 runners in the Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed Cup. The way Queen Of Saba ran and was beaten closely in her previous outing should emerge victorious this time. Run And Win, Capeletti and Over Trick should be her challengers.

Over Trick is a good animal but very bad at start. The filly My Love is an outstanding performer in her previous outing and will be going to make a hat trick of victories in the Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed Cup.

She should be followed by Chan Badshah, Happy Mayla, Babbu The Great and Royal Fish. This will be the first race in racing order.

The Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed Cup has nine runners, if there is no last-minute withdrawal. The filly, Aishwarya, is improving in each of her running and should make amends this time for her defeat last time out.

Yard Arm, Lovely Diana and Sharp Edge should fight for less remunerative positions. The first race will be held at 1.30pm.
