ISLAMABAD, Sept 2: Pakistan top seed Carla Khan won the first POF WISPA Squash tournament on Friday outplaying Malaysian Sharon Wee in yet another impressive display at the Jahangir Khan Complex in Wah.

The England-based Carla lived up to her pre-tournament billing of being the favourite downing Sharon 9-1, 9-3, 9-4 in just 22 minutes.

Executing all her strokes intelligently, Carla faced simply no problems in the first two games but met only a slight resistance in the third.

However, she had her name written on the trophy that was presented to her by the legendary Jahangir Khan, president of the World Squash Federation (WSF) who graced the occasion as chief guest.

So awesome had been Carla’s performance in this $7000 tournament that she thrashed compatriot Muqaddas Ashraf in only 14 minutes in the opening round and needed just 13 to knock out Englishwoman Jenna Gates, who was up against her in the quarterfinals.

Carla also appeared in a hurry as she routed Malaysian Delia Arnold in Thursday’s semifinals for which she needed only 22 minutes.

Currently ranked 23 in the world, Carla said after the match that she was happy to have won in front of her home fans. “I got good support from the crowd which was great.”

She said that her aim was to enter the top ten soon and in this regard she was training hard in England.

Carla hoped that this tournament would prove to be a stepping stone for women players in Pakistan who have hardly had international exposure previously.

Jahangir said that hosting a WISPA tournament was a good beginning for women’s squash in Pakistan.
