SC help sought for rape victim

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Aug 30: A local lawyer on Tuesday approached the Supreme Court seeking a suo motu action by the chief justice against the reported rape of a housewife by a police officer of the Faisalabad district.

Sonia Naz, who was taken into custody at the Parliament House in April, has accused the Station House Officer of Jaranwala (Faisalabad) of raping her in presence of the superintendent police investigation.

Lawyer Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, who submitted the application with Supreme Court Registrar Dr Faqir Hussain, pleaded for an urgent action.

The lawyer sated in the application that though such offences were common in Pakistan and in most cases such excesses on part of the officials went unchecked, it was high time that action was taken to discourage such tendencies in future.

Mr Bhutta told reporters that he had asked the registrar to fix the case as early as possible because of the sensitivity of the matter.
