KARACHI: City govt to instal water treatment plant

KARACHI, Aug 30: Federal Minister for Port and Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri on Tuesday said that the new city government would instal plant to treat sewage of Lyari River before it falls into the sea.

He was talking to newsmen after the ground breaking of Chandni Park being developed by the Karachi Port Trust over 15 acres of land costing Rs40 million at Mai Kolachi Road.

Mr Ghauri said that it was a serious matter, as the treatment plant was necessary to ensure that sea water should not be polluted any further by sewage.

“In fact, it is a job of the city government and we will request the new nazim to take up this project in the interest of citizens. I believe that the new nazim will himself initiate this project as it is badly needed,” he added.

“As soon as the new city nazim will take charge, we will approach him for this plant,” he said.

“We are establishing treatment plants in various parts of the city including industrial areas to treat sewerage water and save the sea from further pollution,” he added.

Earlier addressing the ground breaking ceremony of the park, he said that the park would help improve overall environment and add to the beauty of Karachi.

He said that the KPT would also take care of mangrove trees in the area to improve ecology and beauty of the creek at Mai Kolachi. He said that the park would have a natural lake and a sanctuary for migrating birds.

Babar Ghauri said that the KPT had taken a large number of development projects costing more than Rs3 billion in the metropolis under Karachi Package.

“We believe that the KPT earns revenue because of its presence in Karachi and we should spend some of the income on its infrastructure development in return,” he added.

Referring to the underpass at Schon Circle, he said that the project scheduled to be completed by July 31 had been delayed. However, he assured that the same would be inaugurated by President Musharraf in October.

Besides, he said that Awami Markaz with all public utilities, banks, stores would be built at Gwadar Port. The prime minister would perform ground breaking of this centre next month, he added.

KPT General Manager (Planning and Development) Brig S. Jamshed Zaidi said that the KPT would also preserve mangrove trees spreading over 35 acres of land in the area besides lake and creek water.

Later, the minister unveiled the plaque and attended a briefing by Mrs Bilgrami about the park.—APP
