KARACHI, Aug 28: Adeel Ahmad and Mohammad Ejaz goals in each half powered PTCL to a 2-1 victory over PWD in the Premier League soccer at CDGK Stadium on Sunday.
PTCL were up against the losers from the first half as Abdul Haq came into action in the 25th minute from 16 metres but PWD goalkeeper Sajid was vigilant. But just five minutes later PTCL’s international Adeel Ahmad took advantage of slack defence and side-stepped Sajid to walk the ball into the net.
PWD tried twice through Kareem and Murad Qumi but remained off target, while Ramzan’s free kick was tipped over the bar by PTCL goalkeeper Amjad Rafiq four minutes before the halftime.
The winners maintained their rhythm in the second session and went 2-0 up when Ejaz cashed in on brittle defence before rounding stranded Sajid and finding the cage with a feeble effort just five minutes after restart.
PWD came close twice to reducing the margin only to see Mohammad Jan’s header missing the target in the 60th minute, while it was Naveed’s bad luck two minutes later as his powerful shot from penalty box rattled the post.
Shah Nawaz of PWD and Sibghatullah of PTCL were yellow carded in the 68th minute for rough play.
PWD substitute Shah Nawaz was guilty of missing a sitter when his carpet drive went missing the goal from inches in the 70th minute.
PTCL replaced injured keeper Amjad by stand-in custodian Amir Ali in the 83rd minute. But the change could not prevent PWD from scoring the consolation goal the next minute when Ali Mohammad provided a rising pass to Farooq whose flying header gave Amir no chance.
PWD stepped up efforts for an equaliser but this time Amir was alert when he made a save following one-two between Jan and Kareem whose drive was stopped by the goalie five minutes before time.
Shahid Ahmad of PTCL looked dangerous with his rasping 16-metre drive which could not find the cage, thanks to a fine save by Sajid seconds before final whistle.
Monday’s fixtures: HBL v Wapda at Aga Khan Gymkhana; KPT v KRL at CDGK Stadium.
