KARACHI, Aug 28: Sindh Minister for Education and Literacy Dr Hamida Khuhro held a meeting with a high-powered delegation from the Syrian ministry of education and higher education.
The Syrian delegation comprised Syrian deputy education minister for international relations and training Dr Soulaman Al-Khatib; deputy education minister for curriculum and training Dr Ali Al-Hosri; director, ministry of education Ghassan Shughri; and chief executive officer, Aga Khan Educational Services Syria Dr Ahmed Hayde, while director AKU-IED Karachi Dr Mohammad Memon was accompanied the delegation. Education secretary Syed Ghulam Ali Shah Pasha was also present.
The delegation informed the minister that Syria wanted to improve its educational system by sharing experiences of Pakistan in Information Technology, Technical Education and other important sectors.
Sindh Minister Dr Hamida Khuhro briefed the delegates about the steps taken for improvement in various sectors of education in the province.
She said a comprehensive teachers training programme and restructuring and revamping of technical education was under way.
Dr Khuhro further said that teaching of English had been started from primary to cope with the requirements of the world and accelerate science education.
She said the Muslims could not compete with the rest of world without giving due importance to English and computer learning.
The minister further informed the Syrian delegates that the government was also trying to introduce computer learning from Class I.
The Syrian delegates offered thanks to the Sindh education minister and expressed interest in collaboration in this field.
The Syrian delegation is in Sindh on an official week-long visit.
Dr Hamida Khuhro also addressed the annual prize distribution function of DSRA Educational Welfare Trust School in DHA Karachi.
She called upon the people to come forward and take active part in educational and social reforms initiated by the government.
Hamida Khuhro said since Independence our people are depending upon the government alone to do everything. She said the government was responsible for fulfilling the needs of the people, but they also have to come forward and share efforts of the government.
The minister said the target of quality education and development of a civilised society could not be achieved without active participation of the common man.
The minister appreciated the Defence Residents Association for starting a school in a single room to provide quality education to the poor of their locality and now the school had achieved a visible progress.
She said the government was considering extending financial assistance to the schools being run privately on philanthropic basis.
DSRA Chairman Inam Illahi, DHA Administrator Brig Maqsood, Director Education Brig (Retd) Muzaffar-ul-Hassan, Principal of the School Ms Nasreen Akbar also spoke at the function.—APP
