Egyptian force for Gaza

JERUSALEM, Aug 28: In a key step to ending Israel’s 38-year-old military presence in Gaza, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s cabinet approved on Sunday the deployment of Egyptian police along Egypt’s border with the strip.

The vote was 18-2 in favour.

Under the agreement with Cairo, Egypt is to position 750 special border police on the Egyptian side to replace Israeli troops.

After completing the evacuation of Jewish settlements from the occupied Gaza Strip last week, Israel said its forces could pull out of the border area in late September.—Reuters
