Mauresmo and Davenport meet in final

NEW HAVEN (Connecticut), Aug 27: Lindsay Davenport reclaimed possession of the womens number one ranking on Friday after her straight-set win to reach the final of the WTA event against Amelie Mauresmo.

The 29-year-old American beat Russian Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 6-3 in 72 minutes to capture her crown back from Russian Maria Sharapova who had dethroned her earlier this week for the first time.

The Russian diva has only had a stint at the world No 1 ranking for a week, joining Belgiums Justine Henin-Hardenne as the only other player to have lost her top ranking after just one week to fellow-compatriot Kim Clijsters in Oct 2003.—AFP
