KARACHI: Pakistan-India peace body seeks release of prisoners

KARACHI, Aug 27: As the demand for the release of convicted Indian spy is gaining ground in both the countries, Pakistan-India Peace Coalition on Saturday urged the two governments to release all prisoners to give boost to the peace process.
In a statement, it noted that the death sentence awarded to Sarabjit Singh, jailed 15 years ago on charges of spying for RAW and involvement in several bombing incidents, had suddenly set off a flurry of appeals to stay his execution and release him on humanitarian grounds.
It had spurred a positive reaction in Pakistan too, as seen in the decision of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee to “urge both the governments to take adequate measures for the unconditional and immediate release of prisoners,” it said.
In a joint statement, B.M. Kutty and Karamat Ali maintained that the governments of both countries pondered over the agony caused to the families of those accused of involvement in such activities. It would give a new fillip to the on-going Pakistan-India peace process, if all the persons imprisoned, irrespective of the veracity or otherwise of the charges against them, were released.
