KARACHI, Aug 27: A spokesman for Sindh governor on Saturday said that the governor wanted to hand over cash awards to meritorious graduates of the University of Karachi as per his commitment at the earliest.
Talking to Dawn the spokesman said that the Governor House had no reservations in regard to award of Rs25,000 each to graduates who were awarded gold medals during the KU convocation held on March 5.
Usually, things are disposed in the light of governor’s announcement without sparing any time and that’s why university’s graduates and others have been paid money in a week time as well in the past, added the spokesman, saying that award money to KU students would be handed over as soon as the list of graduates in question are provided by the varsity.
Presiding over the 18th general convocation of the university on March 5, the Sindh Governor and Chancellor of Karachi University, Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, had announced cash awards for the top position holders of different departments.
However, in view of delay in the implementation of his order, a number of graduates aspiring for the cash awards had feared that the issue might fall prey to the “red tapes”.
It was learnt that a senior staff of the Sindh governor within ten days after the convocation had written the KU vice-chancellor to float an official letter having details and particulars of students for release of award money at a ceremony at the Governor’s House.
The official had informed the VC that the governor had announced cash award of Rs25,000 each to top student of each faculty of Karachi University. The governor had also announced a hi-tea for all 206 medallists along with their parents at the Governor’s House.
An official of the university said on Saturday that the Governor House was immediately informed about the details of graduates belonging to three batches of 2004, 2003 and 2002 of the university, who deserved cash awards as pledged by the governor in the convocation.
Officials concerned did not move further as certain clarifications were awaited, added the official, saying that things have once again been directed towards fulfilment of the governor’s commitment and a detailed list of graduates, as per latest requirements, were being furnished to the Governor’s House.
