Over 3,100 candidates elected unopposed


ISLAMABAD, Aug 26: As many as 3,174 candidates returned unopposed in the second phase of elections held in 55 districts on Thursday. Of the winners, 203 were nazims and naib nazims and 206 Muslim general councillors.

Similarly, 626 Muslim women, 179 peasants/workers, 688 minority candidates and 1272 peasants/workers (women) returned unopposed.

On the nazim and naib nazim seats, 66 returned unopposed in Punjab, 41 in Sindh, 17 in the NWFP and 79 in Balochistan. For the seats of Muslim (general) councillor 20 candidates returned unopposed in Punjab, 24 in Sindh, 24 in the NWFP and 138 in Balochistan.

On Muslim (women) seats, 249 returned unopposed in Punjab, 89 in Sindh, 176 in the NWFP and 112 in Balochistan.

On peasants/workers seats, 33 returned unopposed in Punjab, 39 in Sindh, 20 in the NWFP and 87 in Balochistan. As many as 667 candidates returned unopposed on the seats of peasants/workers (women) in Punjab, 222 in Sindh, 270 in the NWFP and 113 in Balochistan.—APP
