India confirms participation
KARACHI, Aug 26: India has confirmed participation in the three-nation South Asian Yachting Regatta (SAYR) Team Racing (Enterprise class) which is being held at the Marina Club from Sept 8 to 11
According to an email sent by the secretary of Indian Sailing Federation, Homi Motiwala, to his Pakistani counterpart on Friday, the Indian government has accorded necessary permission to 13-member team including officials, to compete in the regatta.
The secretary, Pakistan Sailing Federation (PSAF), Capt. (retd) S. V. Hasan said the Indians would intimate the names of sailors, officials and the arrival schedule in next few days.
It may be mentioned that Sri Lanka had already confirmed their participation in the regatta. They would be sending an 11-member squad including two officials.
The SAYR Team Racing in Enterprise class was launched at Karachi in 1978 on a rotation basis. Sri Lanka staged the second edition the following year while India played host in 1981 before it was suspended.
The triangular competition was revived again after a lapse of 23 years at Colombo last year where Pakistan retained their gold.
The PSAF plans to organize an Optimist competition simultaneously in order to provide practice to the budding home sailors.
