LAHORE, Aug 26: Another devastating spell by paceman Muhammad Irshad and a fine opening partnership of 140 runs between Khurram Manzoor and Agha Sabir enabled Pakistan Academy to win the three-match series against South African Academy by taking an unbeatable 2-0 lead, winning the second by 39 runs at the Qadhafi Stadium on Friday.
Set to score 281, South Africa were undone by Irshad who claimed five wickets for 49.
The paceman had taken six wickets for 21 in the first match.
He removed openers Myles Williamson and Jendre Coetzee 16 and also took the prized wicket of South African captain Francois Du Plessis, who was the top scorer (89) hitting nine fours off 106 balls.
Khurram was unlucky to miss a century by five runs while Sabir scored 63 as they laid a strong foundation for the home team’s imposing total of 280 after Pakistan were asked to bat first.
Khurram smashed 14 boundaries and one six off 101 balls while Sabir laced his 76-ball knock with 10 fours.
Once Sabir was separated, caught by wicketkeeper Ryan Canning off leg-spinner Plessis, Khurram found another reliable ally in Shahid Yousuf (30, two fours) to add 50 runs in the second wicket partnership taking the total to 190 by the 33rd over.
Captain Hasan Raza (27, two fours, 28 balls) and Mansoor Amjad (23) batted with long handle in the slog over but the tail- end collapsed as last five wickets could collect 18 runs. Medium-pacer Mario Olivier claimed three wickets for 42 runs.
The third match will be held at the Sheikhupura Stadium on Sunday.
