KARACHI, Aug 26: Former city nazim Niamatullah Khan on Friday pledged to continue serving Karachiites till his last breath, saying he did not need any office for serving the people of the metropolis.

Speaking at a reception hosted in his owner by the Al-Khidmat Group, he reiterated that the Jamaat-i-Islami backed group’s commitment was “serving the public and uplifting Karachi with or without the city government”.

He alleged that widespread rigging in the recent local government elections had exposed those, who claimed to be the actual heirs of the city, as a majority of people had rejected them in the polls.

“I can never forget the trust and affection the people of this city had accorded me as city nazim and even after completion of my term,” he added.

Mr Niamat, who led the Al-Khidmat Group from 2001 till 2005, said the foundations he laid for development projects would benefit Karachiites for a long time to come.

MMA MNA Muhammad Hussain Mehanti said the former city nazim had initiated development projects for the next 20 years in a short span of four years. Abdul Wahid Sheikh, Malik Masood and others also spoke.—PPI
