UNITED NATIONS, Aug 25: The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday elected Justice Ali Nawaz Chowhan of Pakistan as judge of the International Tribunal for the prosecution of persons responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the former territory of Yugoslavia since 1991.

Justice Chowhan received 130 votes as against the required 97. The UN Security Council had decided to establish a pool of judges in the International Tribunal by its Resolution 1329 of November 2000.

Justice Chowhan has been serving as judge of the Lahore High Court since 1999.
