Irshad sets up easy win for Pakistan Academy

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Aug 24: Speedster Mohammad Irshad grabbed a six-wicket haul as Pakistan Academy cantered to an easy 84-run victory over South Africa Academy in the first one-day match at the Bagh-i-Jinnah ground on Wednesday.

The tourists, who were chasing a reachable 245 target in 50 overs, had no answer to the hostility of Irshad who grabbed six for 21 in seven overs as South African Academy collapsed to 160 all out in 39 overs.

Bowling at a fearsome pace, Irshad claimed a wicket in each of his first three overs to reduce South Africans to 19 for three. Once Irshad’s opening spell to an end, the South African Academy skipper Francois du Plessis (23) and Ryan Canning (35) prospered in a fourth-wicket partnership of 53 before Irshad returned to sent back du Plessis.

After Canning also went, dismissed by off-spinner Tahir Khan, only Vaughn van Jaarsveld (33) and Vaughn Philander (21) resisted briefly while putting on 46.

At that point leg-spinner Mansoor Amjad claimed three quick wickets to tilt the match Pakistan Academy’s way.

Earlier, Hasan Raza, the Pakistan Academy captain, continued his good form by top-scoring with a 76-ball 70 that eventually helped his side reach 244 for eight.

The second One-day match will be held at the Qadhafi Stadium on Friday.
