Opposition seeks debate on IAEA report

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Aug 24: Opposition members have submitted an adjournment motion to the Senate Secretariat, seeking a debate on a report in which the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had concluded that the highly enriched uranium particles found in Iran were from the smuggled Pakistani centrifuge parts.

According to parliamentary secretary of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) Izhar Amrohvi, the motion has been filed under Rule 74 of the Rules and Procedure for Conduct of Business in the Senate 1988 and it has been signed by nine senators.

The motion states: “Pakistan had in May sent centrifuge parts to the Vienna headquarters of the watchdog IAEA to enable it to compare microscopic traces of uranium on them with that found on equipment in Iran.

The IAEA has concluded that the highly enriched uranium appears to have emanated from Pakistan and not from Iranian enrichment work.

“The matter is of very serious nature and needs discussion on the floor of the house adjourning the normal proceedings.”

The motion has been signed by Opposition Leader in the Senate Mian Raza Rabbani, Farhatullah Khan Babar, Dr Safdar Abbasi, Rukhsana Zuberi, Enver Baig and Dr Abdullah Riar of the People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP), Ishaq Dar of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), Asfandyar Wali of the Awami National Party (ANP) and Sanaullah Baloch of the Balochistan National Party (BNP).

Meanwhile, the opposition senators have also submitted an adjournment motion seeking a discussion on the report that the World Bank (WB) wanted to have a say in the appointments and transfers and postings of bureaucrats in Pakistan.

The motion states: “The World Bank seeks a say in placement of bureaucrats who are due next month after getting training abroad. The WB’s country office has approached the Establishment Division to work out their placements through mutual consultations.

The motion has been signed by Raza Rabbani, Dr Safdar Abbasi, Farhatullah Babar, Enver Baig and Dr Abdullah Riar of the PPP, Ishaq Dar and Sardar Mehtab Abbasi of the PML-N, Sanaullah Baloch of the BNP and Amanullah Kanrani of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP).
