HYDERABAD: PPP leader welcomes army deployment

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Aug 24: Member of the National Assembly and Pakistan People’s Party leader Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur, in a statement faxed to Dawn here on Wednesday, welcomed the deployment of army and Rangers in Kohistan (Jamshoro) for the local body elections to maintain law and order.

The PPP leader said that he had sent a telegram to the acting chief election commissioner requesting him to authorize army to check rigging at polling stations.

Mr Talpur alleged that a federal minister from Dadu had held a secret meeting with the senior administrative officers to chalk out a strategy to manipulate the LB polls. He also alleged that the district police officer of Jamshoro was a dishonest person and would help in fixing the election results.

The MNA expressed fear that rigging would lead towards violence in the area.

DOCTORS: The director general health services Sindh, Dr Hadi Jatoi, said while talking to a delegation of doctors at his office here on Wednesday that he would highlight the problems of the doctors of Sindh at the federal level during the elections of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.

Dr Jatoi had been nominated to contest the elections during the next month in Islamabad.

He said a campaign should be launched against quacks who were responsible for spread of diseases like AIDS and Hepatitis B and C.

The DG said that PMDC should have its branches in all provinces of the country to solve the problems of doctors at the provincial level.

He said that it was for the first time in the history of Pakistan that a doctor from the interior Sindh would be representing his community at the federal level.

World Bank: A World Bank team met with the senior officers of Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority here on Tuesday to finalize arrangements for a new water project.

The project was named as “Water Sector Improvement Project” and would cost around 170 million dollars.

A three-member team met with SIDA Managing Director Manzoor Shaikh and expressed satisfaction over progress of the irrigation reforms in the province.

SIDA General Manager (transition) Professor Aijaz Qureshi, General Manager Finance Ahmed Saqib, General Manager Operation Maula Bux, and General Manager Development Dr Mumtaz Sohag attended the meeting.
