HARIPUR, Aug 21: A young man was found dead in the lockup of Khanpur police station here on Saturday evening. The youth, identified as Mohammad Saleem of Pind Gakhra village, had been arrested earlier in the day on charges of murdering his brother Mohammad Aslam in June this year.

The police said the youth had committed suicide.

“While lodged in the lock-up, Saleem used a shaving blade to slash the main artery near his neck,” police officials said. He died before medical aid could be administered to him, they said.

However, the family of the accused refused to accept the police version of events and described Saleem’s death as “a case of custodial killing”. The family demanded an inquiry into the incident.

Last year, a man held in the custody of Khanpur police died after being subjected to severe torture. Although the police tried to present his death as suicide, a judicial probe found that three policemen of had tortured the man to death.

ACCIDENTAL DEATH: A 16-year-old girl was killed on Sunday when the shotgun of a male relative accidentally went off.

Mohammad Arif told police in Kangra Colony that his cousin Saira Bibi, daughter of Niaz of Mansehra district, was sitting in the courtyard when his 12- bore rifle went off accidentally. A bullet struck the girl in the chest.

Ms Saira was rushed to hospital but she died from her wounds on the way to hospital.

Meanwhile, a boy was crushed to death by a speeding passenger bus in Kangra bazaar. Police said that Jamal Din, 9, son of Fazal-ur-Rehman, was crossing the road when a rashly-driven bus No 6719 AD ran over him.
